Hi all.
I recently started using goldwave full time.
I was using adobe audition 1.5 and 3.0 for many years.
I think I learned how to use it for the most part but there is something that I don't like the way it is and I am wondering if it can be changed.
I set space bar to play my selection.
This is how it used to be in adobe audition as well.
If i select something with the left and right brackets and I delete it, then the start and end selections are at the same place so by pressing space to continue playing we don't hear anything.
We have to press control+shift+end after deleting something, to set the end selection to the end of the audio so we can carry on playing from the deletion point and after.
I am wondering if there is an automatic way for the end selection to go to the end of the audio after deleting something.
I mean it is not difficult to press control+shift+end but if I do this many times it gets annoying.
Also I don't like the compressions in goldwave and I was wondering if there are any free or cheep vst plugins for compression.
I am not asking for anything fancy. I need something to keep my recordings to an even level throughout a recording.
In adobe audition there was a preset called classic soft knee under dynamics and processing and it was working really well.
I am working with spoken audio mainly talking books and magazines.
So if you could help me with any of these it would be nice.
Thanks
Nikos
Can't speak to Goldwave as I understand it to be somewhat limited in what it can do, but I can say a bit about compression. Simply put, if you can learn how to properly use it, then it would help you out to do so. it's a bit hard to wrap your head around, but knowing what all the terms like threshold, ratio knee size etc mean and how to use them would negate your use for presets. Presets are great sometimes, except when they aren't. It's really all about how serious you are about audio editing and mixing though. And this coming from someone who is pretty serious. I spent so much time fiddling with presets, not really knowing how a plug in worked, only that it did soft of.
I do not agree Goldwavis limited, but I do agree that learning how to use compression, limiting, threashhold gating and companding is a good idea.
As far as the start and end mark, you do not have to use those to delete. You can also place cue points and delete between those.
Hi.
Thanks to both of you for the suggestions.
I tried playing with the different compression settings for both goldwave and audacity without being able to achieve the result I wanted.
Especially goldwave sounds very bad most of the time. Instead of keeping the sound to an even level, the sound keeps going up and down quickly.
But you are right I don't understand compleetely the meaning of the different settings.
As for cue points, instead of left and right selection, I don't think they would be more helpful because I delete usually small sections like clicks, loud breaths etc so we are talking about 1 second selections or less.

The problem with Audacity (and maybe Goldwave?) is you can't listen to your effects in real-time. That real-time monitoring really helps when doing stuff like compression. Speaking of which, when compressing, threshold and Ratio are very important. Basically, your threshold is the level at which audio begins to be compressed. So if you set it anything that goes higher than your threshold will be compressed. Then Ratio is the amount of gain or volume compensation that happens. So with a setting of 2/1, for every 2 DB that is reduced, 1DB is raised. Attack and release times are how long it takes for the compression to kick in. Too short, and it can be really noticeable. Too long, and you might miss the compression entirely. Honestly, look up compression on youtube and you'll find lots of helpful information. I've been doing this for five years, and honestly, compression is something I have a hard time with.
As for pops, clicks and breaths, does Goldwave have a noise gate? This can be really helpful for cutting out all sounds below a certain volume. A lot of people use it for breaths. Just be sure you don't set its threshold too high, or you might cut out parts of what you want to keep. Used sparingly though, Noise gates are pretty great. They also have similar controls to that of a compressor, except for Ratio.
For compression I use Octimax and Rock Steady.
Yes Goldwave has a noise gate, is able to remove pops and clicks, and has preset filters to remove tape his and 60 hz hum. The parametric and graphic equalizer are also able to do very fine adjustments.
Hi.
I never heard of Octimax and Rock Steady.
Are they vst? Can I use them with both audacity and goldwave?
Are they free or payed?
Thanks Remy for the tips on compression and noise gate.
I will play more with both and see what I can achieve or destroy haha.

With compression, much like with EQ, one thing to remember is that in most cases, less is more. Most of the time it is corrective, and all of the time, the better the recording you get, the easier it will be to make work.
Oops, I forgot those two are only for winamp.
Good point. The better the original recording, the easier to tweak. On a poor recording you get stuck deciding between trade offs.
Wish gold wave was better for multi-tracking.
Goldwave's strength is to edit and polish an already mixed down multitrack recording. I use MultiQuence from the same company to do the multi-track recording and mix-down, then I finish the product in Goldwave.
Hi.
I never heard of MultiQuence.
Is it accessible with NVDA?
On the goldwave website they promote video melt but they don't mention MultiQuence at all.
Video Meld is what replaced MultiQuence. However, Video Meld is not accessible as yet. So, if you send a message to the owner, and tell him you are blind, he will provide a link to MultiQuence for you. If you buy Video Meld, he'll give you the license to MultiQuence.
What I really want is a virtual analogue synthesizer, with virtual knobs and sliders and all that.
